The Day I Met My TOEFL Destiny: Featuring Inversion Grammar
🎓 “The Day I Met My TOEFL Destiny”
✅Practicing Inversion
Never had I realized how early 8 a.m. could feel until the morning of my TOEFL test. The night before, I had promised myself to sleep at 10 p.m., but so interesting was the new Netflix series that I finished the entire season instead.
Hardly had I closed my eyes when my alarm screamed, “TIME FOR TOEFL!” I jumped out of bed like a soldier under attack. I ran down the street, holding my admission ticket and half a croissant.
At the test center, the supervisor said, “You’re two minutes late.”
“Were you me,” I said dramatically, “you would understand the suffering of public transportation!”
During the listening section, my stomach growled so loudly that the girl next to me gave me her last granola bar. Under no circumstances should one take the TOEFL on an empty stomach!
Halfway through the reading passage, I accidentally clicked “End Test.”
“Had I read the instructions,” I whispered, “I might have avoided this tragedy.”
Then came speaking. My microphone didn’t work. Never have I prayed harder for technology to show mercy. I began shouting into the mic like an opera singer:
“Personally, I believe that people should buy local products!”
Finally, the test ended.
Had anyone been listening from outside, they would have thought it was a therapy session, not an exam.
No sooner had I left the building than I promised myself never to underestimate the TOEFL again.
And yet… the very next week, I signed up to take it again — because, apparently, I enjoy pain.😅
*️⃣ Tip: Inversion happens when we change the normal word order (subject + verb) — usually to make sentences more formal, emphatic, or literary.
Instead of saying, “I had never seen such a test,” we say, “Never had I seen such a test.”
